Elon Musk confirms tesla entering in India soon, during PM Modi's current visit to US

Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla will enter India soon, and the company is reportedly considering a number of locations for its first factory in the country.
During their meeting in New York City, New York, U.S., June 20, 2023.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has reiterated his commitment to investing in India, saying that he is "confident" that the company will be in the country "as soon as humanly possible."

Musk made the remarks on Tuesday following a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New York. The two leaders discussed a range of issues, including Tesla's plans for India.

"(Modi) really cares about India because he's pushing us to make significant investments in India, which is something we intend to do," Musk told reporters. "We are just trying to figure out the right timing."

Musk has been pushing to enter the Indian market for several years, but the company has been stymied by high import duties. Tesla has been seeking to negotiate lower duties with the Indian government, but the government has reportedly been reluctant to do so.

However, Musk's meeting with Modi appears to have given him some hope that an agreement can be reached.

"I am confident that Tesla will be in India and will do so as soon as humanly possible," he said.

Musk also said that he plans to visit India next year.

"I am incredibly excited about the future of India," he said. "I think India has a lot of potential."

India is a major market for electric vehicles, and Tesla's entry into the country would be a major coup for the company. The Indian government is also keen to promote the use of electric vehicles, and Tesla's investment would be a major boost to the country's efforts to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels.

In addition to the high import duties, Tesla has also faced other challenges in its efforts to enter the Indian market. The company has been criticized for its lack of a local manufacturing presence, and it has also been accused of not being supportive of the Indian government's "Make in India" initiative.

However, Musk's meeting with Modi appears to have allayed some of these concerns. Modi has said that he wants India to become a major hub for electric vehicle manufacturing, and he has pledged to provide Tesla with the necessary support to make that happen.

With Modi's backing, Tesla is now in a strong position to enter the Indian market. The company has the potential to revolutionize the Indian automotive industry, and its investment would be a major boost to the country's economy.

Tesla has been in talks with the Indian government for several years about setting up a manufacturing plant in the country. The Indian government has been reluctant to lower import duties for electric vehicles, but it has said that it is open to providing Tesla with other incentives, such as tax breaks.

Tesla is not the only electric vehicle maker that is interested in the Indian market. Other companies, such as Hyundai and Mahindra, have also been investing in electric vehicle manufacturing in India. The Indian government is targeting a 30% share of electric vehicles in the country's passenger vehicle market by 2030.

Tesla's investment in India is a major development for the country's automotive industry. The company's entry into the market could help to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles in India and boost the country's economy.
